Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum

The Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum (Ru) is one of the oldest museums of its kind in Russia. Today its collection consists of 12,000 pieces, mostly Russian art from the 14-20th centuries: icons, paintings, sculptures and decorative-applied art. Here you can see the works of Briullov, Shishkin, Levitan, Vasnetsov, Malevich, Kandinsky and other world-famous artists.

Park Shveitzariya (Ru) is a large park filled with century-old trees and shaded pathways. It is an ideal place to spend time with family or friends, as there’s plenty of entertainment options: cafés and restaurants, a small amusement park, some playgrounds and the very first (small) zoo of Nizhny Novgorod: home to deer, lynx, wolves, camels, tigers, raccoons and other wild and domestic animals. The Photography Museum in Nizhny Novgorod

Photography Museum

This little Photography Museum (Ru) is located in a former ranch. Photo exhibitions are devoted to Nizhny Novgorod and Soviet times, but you can also see the evolution of technology here: from 100-pound wooden Soviet cameras to Leica and Kodak. Find here also the studio where the founders of artistic and journalistic photography in Russia have been working from in the 19th century: Andrey Karelin and Maxim Dmitriev.

The Church of the Ascension in Nizhny Novgorod

Church of the Ascension

The Church of the Ascension (Ru) is a stone three-altar church that was built early 18th century from the donations of parishioners and benefactors. It got closed during Soviet times and was instead used as a warehouse and a dwelling. In 2003 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.


In the basement, there’s a sanctified Elizabethan chapel, used for worshipping. The restoration works inside aren't completely finished yet. Get directions.

The Church of the Resurrection in Nizhny Novgorod

Church of the Resurrection

This church from 1884 was transformed into a bakery during Soviet times. In 1999 it was returned to the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, after which the services resumed in the annexe of the church.


Today, the main structure is still being renovated. In 2016 the residents of Nizhny Novgorod celebrated the 130th anniversary of the consecration of the Church of the Resurrection (Ru). Get directions.
